Small dogs are not scaled-down big dogs. Their necks are proportionally more fragile, their airways narrower, and badly chosen gear causes real problems. Here is what actually matters under ten kilos.

Protect the throat

Toy breeds are prone to tracheal sensitivity, and a lunging little dog on a collar concentrates all that force on a few centimeters of windpipe. For walks, a harness is the safer default for most small breeds; keep the collar for the ID tag.

Step-in and vest styles win

Many small dogs dislike gear passing over their head. Step-in harnesses (front legs in, clip on the back) and soft vest styles avoid the struggle entirely and spread pressure over a wide, padded area.

Weight of hardware counts

A metal buckle that is nothing on a labrador is a noticeable load on a 2 kg chihuahua. Look for light plastic side-release buckles and thin webbing - and skip heavy decorations on daily-wear gear.

Sizing traps

Small-breed sizes vary wildly between styles: XS in one cut equals S in another. Ignore the letter, measure the chest girth, and match centimeters to each product's chart. After fitting, check that leg openings do not rub behind the front legs.
